NOTICE: CHANGE OF WEB HOST
If you can read this then I have successfully finished moving my blog to my new hosting company. There will almost certainly be bugginess somewhere - please let me know if you see any!
All That I Am - 'Relationship and Sex Education' from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham
Blogged by James Preece on 10th August 2009
I really cannot say how this video came in to my posession, except that it did (I think I must have found it under a toadstool or something) I am reproducing it here because I sincerely believe that Catholic families across the country are being mislead and betrayed by the very people who are supposed to be helping them. The fact that the current Archbishop of Westminster has approved of this video makes it all the more important that people are aware of it's contents.
“Parents must politely but firmly exclude any attempts to violate children’s innocence because such attempts compromise the spiritual, moral and educational development of growing persons who have a right to their innocence.”
A note on copyright...
As far as I am aware I am not breaking the law by reproducing this video here. UK Copyright law has an exception known as "fair dealing"... "Fair dealing with a work for the purpose of criticism or review, of that or another work, or of a performance of a work, does not infringe copyright in the work, provided it is accompanied by a sufficient acknowledgement, and provided the work has actually been made available to the public." I hereby acknowledge that I have not created this "work" and it was created by the Archdiocese of Birmingham Department of Religious Education. I am not reproducing it in full, so it cannot be used in the classroom and I am not selling it or seeking to profit from it. I am reproducing it only for the purpose of criticism.
Notes on the video...
The full video is sixteen minutes long, I have edited it down to four. I have focused on the sex education components and the "spiritual" ones. As this film has been produced by a Roman Catholic Archdiocese and approved of by Archbishop Vincent Nichols himself, I have been careful to retain all references to Scripture and Church teaching. If you feel that there are not many references to Scripture and Church teaching in the video then this is because there are not many to begin with and not because I have left any out. I have left in some sections about moving to a new school in order to help give a bit of context about how young the children watching this video really are.
Nine years old.
This video contains computer simulated full frontal nudity and while Archbishop Vincent Nichols may approve of it being shown to primary school Children, you may prefer to watch it when there are no children around.
The only Catholic thing I can find in that whole video is the Catholic School in the background towards the end.
Catholic content...
The whole thing is profoundly secular and doesn't contain a single bible quote even a passing reference to Christianity or even God (there is an Archbishop in the Credits). Instead there is a sort of secular spirituality layered on top... "We saw that this inner happiness and peace can radiate outwards and can in turn invite and spread friendship" The video carries not even a tiny hint of where inner happiness and peace is to be found.
Gratuitous nudity...
Then there's the nude bodies flying at the screen. What are they for? There is absolutely nothing educational about them at all. I am quite sure that if a man on the street were found showing such pictures to nine year old girls he would be arrested.
I don't want to write too much more because I think the video speaks for itself. I know what I think, what I want to know is...
What do you think?
Update: Jackie Parkes has lots more information on this here.

This sexual video should not be shown to Primary school children and certainly not to mixed classes. It is too much information too soon and it and breaks the Vatican ruling that children this age must receive no classroom lessons on sex in Catholic Primary schools.

Daphne, I have seen you on EWTN speaking about our glorious Faith. Thank you for the wonderful work you have done in presenting the true Faith to children.

Humph (says he disapprovingly) how did the rest of us turn out so normal? Or maybe it's because those of my generation (and I am assuming that I am not that much older than the author) were never exposed to this stuff that we find this stuff appalling and we are the wrong ones? I wonder.

It might be useful to start a petition regarding this.

I think I'd encourage people to write. When it comes to political matters, people always say that a letter counts for more than a petition. On the other hand, the Church isn't a democracy, and the laity don't elect bishops. In any case, I'd say write and pray is a good idea.
I'm not sure who I'd write to. I expect there's a relevant Pontifical Council (or some such thing) that could be written to, but I imagine writing to the Archbishop would be the appropriate first step.

Well done James; our school wouldn't let any parent borrow the material!
Writing to the Archbishop seems a waste of time. He is fully aware; beyond being told that 'this is being looked into', I have seen no change in the ststus of 'All that I am', and it remains the recommended material of the CES. I gather there are two departments (CDF and education) in Rome under whose responsibility such material falls, so it may be difficult to express ones concerns to any effect...
