The Passion of Jesus Christ and Suffering
Blogged by Ella Preece on 25th June 2010
In order for man to redeem himself to God he must do what Adam failed to, and that is unconditionally obey God in love. When Adam was the first created, he was created without sin, mankind is now bound by Original Sin which means he is not capable to redeem himself therefore God Himself must come to earth as man. It is only though the decision of Jesus Christ, God incarnate that we can hope to be saved. Jesus is fully man, he has to learn, to eat, to sleep, to suffer, he has the freedom to reject God if he chooses but because he is sinless, because is fully divine, of the Holy Trinity, he knows and understands God and because he loves us and wants to redeem us he is prepared to suffer and to die so that the damage of original sin may be removed.
Through baptism we participate in Christ's death and therefore the bounds of Original Sin are removed. However we still live in a world that is tainted by sin and the powers of evil and therefore any suffering that is cause by the disharmony of nature is not removed. God again uses this to His glory as Augustine says "Since God is the highest good, He would not allow any evil to exist in His works, unless His omnipotence and goodness were such as to bring good even out of evil.".
