Date a Married Catholic?
Blogged by James Preece on 8th January 2013
Dear Independent Catholic News,
I went on your dating website and said I was looking for a Catholic divorced woman to date and it offered me four choices including "Liz58" in Lewes and "Marguerite"in Bournemouth. When I said I wanted to date a divoced Catholic man I was presented with eight options including "1Cor13man" in Aberdeen.
You also have the option to search for a date whose marital status is "seperated". Is "seperated" another way of saying "still married"? Do you think it's appropriate for a Catholic dating site to be helping married Catholics to look for romantic lurrve? Are Independent Catholic News aiding adultery?
It's possible that some of the divorced Catholics have annulments but your site is remarkably quiet on the matter. I can filter out the ones who smoke, but there's no feature to tell me whether they are actually free to enter in to a sacramental marriage.
Do you think you could get it sorted out please?
James

Of course, the matter of "divorce" per se is irrelevant: what is important is whether a person has a valid Catholic marriage or not. As for men "dating" men, words almost fail me. But I ask the readers of this excellent web-site, when did you last hear a sermon about marriage? The website cannot spell the word "separated".
Our Lady Help of Christians - pray for us.
St Athanasius - pray for us
All Ye English Martyrs - pray for us.
St. Charles Lwanga and Companion Martyrs of Uganda who were martyred because they resisted the advances of a homosexual paedophile – pray for us.

I take your point Chrysostom. With so many young gay men being drawn to the Extraordinary Form these days it is disappointing to learn that they have to use a website to find like minded souls.
Archbishop Richard Dawkins - don't pray for us.
Brother Ricky Gervais of Reading & Slough, cruelly exiled to Hollywood for 1000 days now despite having done nothing wrong, according to a BBC spokesman - don't pray for us.
Peter Tatchell & the companion brothers of the Soho Masses, martyred by being moved to a church down the road for engaging in homosexual practices- don't pray for us.

Actually, it's your humble blogger that can't spell seperated/separated...

Hi James. I'm a bit concerned why you're looking for a Catholic date when you're already married! Does your wife know?!

does the site actually promote men dating men or can anybody go looking for anybody (i.e. does the site simply not prohibit a male registering and looking for other males)? There is a difference.

I think the men dating men thing is probably off track. I don't think James was commenting about that. There's a dating search and a friends search, as I think is usually the case. That opens the whole thing up to more generous interpretations.
The search doesn't seem to ask you for your sex, so it's up to the user to work out whether it's a heterosexual or homosexual search!
@Matt – Oh you wag!
@Chrysostom – I last heard a sermon about marriage on the feast of the Holy Family, so the Sunday after Christmas.

I regularly date a married Catholic woman, and have done so for years.
Over time we have got quite fond of each other, which is as well, given we've been married for nearly 30 years.

The answer I can give is that I heard one just before Christmas and another one just afterwards. Not to mention several others in recent months. By two different priests, I might add.
