Advanced Encryption Standard: The Comic Strip
Blogged by James Preece 3 Years ago...
If you work with computers for a company that handles, stores and processes credit card information (which I do) and if you pull the short straw (which I did) then you end up being responsible for making sure your company is PCI DSS compliant.
The PCI DSS people love their acronyms, so I am busy filling in a PCI DSS SAQ SOC and am stopping regularly to use the glossary. It stands for "Payment Card Industry Data Secrity Standard Self Assessment Questionnaire Statement of Compliance" and in English that means I'm filling in a form to tell Visa that we don't put credit card numbers on CDs and leave them on trains.
Okay... so there's a bit more to it than that. A lot more... actually it's a nightmare.
As part of checking our PCI DSS compliance I needed to learn about encryption which is what I have spent the last few days doing and that's how I stumbled across this awesome cartoon about AES... sorry, that's the Advanced Encryption Standard.
Everybody should know the three "big ideas" about cryptography...

You can read the full stick figure guide to the advanced encryption standard which comes with handy "exit" points depending on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go.
Me? I just love it when people explain complex stuff with pictures.
